Question- Need Answer. (And A Rant About Love)

I've read in the past that three months is the typical wait time before you nudge an agent on a full. Now I'm hearing it's six months. Anyone know? I've passed the three month mark but don't want to nudge too soon.

And in a completely unrelated and random thought... I watched the 2009 version of Wuthering Heights yesterday. Have I mentioned I HATE Wuthering Heights? I do. Why did I watch the movie then? Tom Hardy. Ahem. I mean, Tom Hardy. No, what I meant to say was, I'm trying to find something redeeming about the story. (But seriously, Tom Hardy.)

I didn't. Find anything redeeming I mean. Sure, you fans out there will argue what an epic love story it is, how much Cathy and Heathcliff love each other, so much so that Heathcliff begs Cathy's dead corpse to haunt him.
Ugh. They don't love each other! If they did, they would be nicer. They would let each other live their lives. They wouldn't torment each other. It's such a twisted, poisonous love, it makes me sick. It's awful. Seriously.
Call me... I can't think of the right word for me, but I like love stories to be a bit... lovelier. They don't always have to end well, it doesn't have to be smooth sailing the whole way through, but there needs to be something GOOD about love.
Okay, no more ranting about Wuthering Heights. Anyone know the answer to my agent question (the reason I'm posting in the first place)?

  1. I agree with you wholeheartedly on this. This is not love, this is crazypants obsession and nothing more. I watched this movie version too because of *ahem* Tom Hardy, and the fact that the main characters were pretty did nothing to redeem this story in any way. Still hate it. As far as the Brontes are concerned, I'll be sticking with Charlotte :)

  2. I have to say, I love Wuthering Heights. But then, I like twisted, tortured, thin-line-between-love-and-hate/madness/obsession. I don't count it as one of the great love stories or anything, but I do really like the relationship Cathy and Heathcliff have - whatever it's classified as.

As for the question, I think 3 months is still the mark, unless the agency has a no response means no policy for fulls. A short "checking in for an update, hope you're having a great winter" email, I think, is perfectly acceptable. And if they go nuts and fly off the handle because you contacted them after 90 days, well, is that really an agent you want to work with?

  3. I started that movie and couldn't finish it because I was bored. I've only had one agent request a full and she was more than happy to respond to my three month nudge. She was apologetic that she hadn't read it yet. But I only nudged her because she states to do so on her blog. It's hard to know though if this agent hasn't said anything in her submission guidelines or blog. But I think a nudge after three months shouldn't hurt.

  4. couldn't agree with you more about Wuthering Heights. Not my cup of tea. And I would go with your gut with the nudging an agent issue. I don't think it hurts to do so after three months, but whatever sits better with you

  5. I've never seen the movie, but I've been considering re-reading Wuthering Heights. Perhaps I shouldn't, now! Regarding the query qusetion, I've heard 3 months as well. See if the agent states on their website what they prefer. Many specifically say how long you should wait. If they don't, I say it doesn't hurt to give them a brief nudge.

  6. Oh, Tom Hardy. Have you seen This Means War? So good.
And I never finished Wuthering Heights. I've planned to go back to it but maybe I won't now... And as for the agent thing, I say check to see if the website says what their policy is, then go with your gut. Three months is a good chunk of time. Good luck!! And I awarded you on my blog today if you want to check it out.:) katieonfiction.blogspot.com

  7. AGREED. Bella mentions it about a million times in Twilight, so I picked it up, embarrassed that I hadn't read it. WOW. I was sort of shocked...for the same reasons you are. Maybe I should watch the movie? Although, that didn't seem to sway you. It's still a classic, so I'll respect it as that. About the agent...so sorry, I don't know. I say contact them. If they're that easily turned off by a phone call or email, you don't want them anyway, right? Sorry...kind of a long comment :P
