What's In A Name

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic

If you couldn't use your own name, what would your pseudonym or penname be?

Um, no idea. Really. No. Idea. I've toyed with using my first initials before like M. M. Stanford. Or just Mel Stanford. But picking a whole new name? Not a clue. I actually like my name. I hated it when I was younger, I wanted to be named something pretty like Ariel or Arianna. And my (maiden) last name wasn't so hot either. "Burt" is an easy target for kids.
So anyway, since I've never chosen my own pseudonym (if it weren't for the word above, I'd never be able to spell that myself), I'm going to let the Fake Name Generator do it for me. So here's my new pseudonym:
Ivy A. Naylor
So that's me. Ivy Naylor. Do you have any pennames picked out?

  1. Like you, I've never really considered being published under any other name than my own. Perhaps it's the thought of seeing my name--the one I've grown up with--there on the spine of a book in Barnes & Noble? I suspect a lot of it has to do with the reason I used my name as my blog name and my URL--I want people to know this is my work, my thoughts, and no-one else is to blame for them! :)

  2. I don't know what I'd use either. I did the random name generator and it gave me: Natasha T. Hayes. I like Natasha! Kind of slinky.

  3. Ivy Naylor isn't bad, but I agree that your own name is much better!

  4. That's actually not a bad pen name for a fake name generator. I had way too much fun with that thing. I came up with: Annalise Alexander, Demi-lee Kerr, or Tiegan Ferguson. Then I decided to switch it to Hobbit and came up with: Menegilda Puddifoot and Pandora Grubb. So hard to choose...

Like you, I think I'll stick with the name I was given :)

  5. Aw, now I wished I tried Hobbit on the name generator! Actually, I used it a few times trying to get a name that didn't belong to an eighty year old. Some might argue about Ivy on that one, but I've always liked the name Ivy.

  6. tough one. My name is 'unique' and stands out, but that's not always a good thing. I always liked the name Kelly, but that's due to my past obsession with Saved By The Bell.

  7. Ivy Nayler is pretty good actually. So, is your real name. I use my first initial and maiden name, so it is my name and a pen name.
