What's Up Wednesday: The Tenth Doctor

What I'm Reading
I finished A Tale of Two Centuries by Rachel Harris which was really cute, although I liked My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century better. (They're companion novels, MSSSC came out first and takes place in the past while AToTC happens present time.) Then I read Sisters' Fate by Jessica Spotswood, the last of the Cahill Chronicles. The book was great. I liked how even though I could barely remember what happened in the first two, I jumped back into the series no problem. She wrapped it all up nicely and I wasn't disappointed. (Still liked the first one better, but that's just me.)

What I'm Writing Revising
Still working away at JAR OF HEARTS.

What Works For Me
I'm a very visual person, and I'm also rubbish at describing things. So when I'm trying to describe a character or setting, I like to look up pictures to help me out. On Monday, I got a little side-tracked doing exactly this thing. There's a lot of characters in JAR OF HEARTS and I've already "cast" the four main ones. But there are also four girls who are important to the story and very different from each other in both looks and characteristics. So I looked up actresses to "cast" these girls because I really wanted to SEE their physical differences before moving onto their character differences. It was surprisingly hard, but this is what I came up with... for now.

What Else I've Been Up To
Doctor Who! I watched the first season last year and thought it was just okay. I DID NOT get what all the hype was about. When I finally got around to starting season two, I was hooked almost instantly, and the seasons have just gotten better (so far). I've finished season four and right now I'm waiting (anxiously!) for the specials that happened between seasons 4 and 5 to come in from my library. I'm really going to miss the Tenth Doctor though. I almost don't want to start season five because there will be no more David Tennant. Boo.
What have you been up to?

  1. Oh I love Doctor Who! I actually love love love season 1 and the 9th Doctor, and do not get the 10 love. Lol. I mean I have seen the whole series sooo I just like the show in general but 9 is my Doctor ;)
I'm also really visual and make a Pinterest board for every one of my ideas. It helps me get a sense of character, place, things they might say, etc.
    Good luck revising!!!!

P.S. I too loved Born Wicked the best. :) But the whole trilogy was fun!

  3. glad you continue to give DW a chance, one of my favorite shows! I'm also a visual person and I love that you look at pictures while prepping to write a description, a great idea! I'm excited to read Sisters' Fate, I really enjoyed the series so far.

  4. LOVE Tennant's Doctor - Seasons 2-4 are the best, in my opinion! I enjoyed BORN WICKED, but I still haven't picked up the rest of the series. Too many books to read!

  5. TEN!!!!! He is my favourite Doctor and, quite honestly, I haven't liked the show since he left. He is just adorable. I love him! <3

Good luck with that editing :D

  6. Ten was my favorite Doctor too. I liked Nine okay, and Eleven isn't horrible. But, yeah, ten is THE DOCTOR.

    Have a wonderful week!

  7. Yes! Doctor Who's first season is okay. But once you get into David Tennant territory everything gets much better :)
And then Matt Smith? <3 <3

  8. Yay Doctor Who! I love Nine but I've always thought that his series was the weakest. Ten is wonderful. Eleven was my first Doctor so I'll always have a special place in my heart for him, but after series five the show goes downhill IMO.

I used to look up pictures to use as reference for my characters for the same reason. I really should start doing that again.

  9. Okay, I'm seriously wondering now if I need to give Doctor Who another try. I really tried to get into the first season and couldn't. I know--shameful for a sci-fi nerd. I used to watch the original series when I was super little though, so maybe that makes up for it? (not that I understood it or anything lol)

I have Jessica Spotswood's first book on my shelf and need to read it already. It's great to hear that the series had a good ending. Now I'm looking forward to it even more! Good luck working on JAR OF HEARTS this week!

  10. I was the exact same when it came to Doctor Who - I really didn't *get* it when I first started watching, but then I think I fell into David Tennant's web of awesomesauce and ... yeah, binge-watched the rest.

I too love casting my characters! The only problem is, once I start searching for guys to match my heroes, I just end up drooling over pictures of Tom Hiddlestone. It's a vicious cycle, I tell you! Have a wonderful week, Melanie! :)
