What's Up Wednesday: Smarts and Opera

What I'm Reading
I finished Of Triton and then blew through Eldest by Christopher Paolini. It was a reread for me so I skimmed a lot of it because sheesh, it's way longer than it needs to be. One of these days I'll read the last two of the series but right now I'm reading White Cat by Holly Black. This book has been on my radar since I started plucking YA off the shelves a few years ago but I never got around to reading it. Then a CP recommended it to me for world building help, so yeah. This is me, diving in.

What I'm Writing Revising
I'm almost done my manuscript read-thru. I've got some ideas and I'm starting to get excited about these changes even though they're big ones. There's this tiny voice inside doubting it all (changing stuff will only bring new problems, the voice says) but I keep telling it to shush.

What Inspires Me Right Now
People who are smarter than me. No joke. Sometimes I feel like the biggest idiot who ever tried to string two words together on a page. (How does everyone else know the right thing to do and I keep missing the mark?) And yet, these people are kind enough to help a girl out, whether it's blog posts, critiques, books... and I couldn't do this thing without them. I would never get better, even if it feels like by inches sometimes, without them. So thank you!

What Else I've Been Up To
For some reason my computer won't take iTunes anymore. My hubs worked on it for hours and hours but to no avail. So he put iTunes on our very unused laptop. This is great and all, but it means I had to erase my playlists and start over from scratch on three devices since I apparently can't have iTunes on two different computers. So I've been listening to a lot of music trying to recreate my playlists. This has been going on for over a week and I'm still doing it. What can I say, I love my tunes. (Currently listening to some Italian opera)

What have you been up to?

  1. I really enjoyed White Cat, Holly Black is one of my favorite writers ever! Sorry to hear about Itunes screwing you over. Can't imagine losing all my playlists! Hang in there!

  2. Crush that doubt, crush it!!!!

I hate it when iTunes has moods like that. My iPod isn't always keen on charging through my laptop. *sigh* Oh, technology. So tricky.

    Have a great week!

  3. One of the great things about memes like WUW is getting to know other writers, and drawing from this vast pool of wisdom and experience for ideas and encouragement. Don't ever feel small, Melanie. We're all in the same boat, with the same doubts and insecurities. :)

    Have a wonderful week!

  4. Good luck with your revising and your iTunes shuffling. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  5. I loathe iTunes. Loathe. I occassionally buy stuff through itunes so I can have new music on my ipod, but their software does not update well on my PC. I barely buy CDs any more, I maybe bought one last year, so I mainly listen to music through Spotify. This is a huge deal for me given I was a band fangirl/album hoarder back in the day, trading rare stuff on ebay, the works. I found I don't care as much about owning music, which is something I could not have said a few years ago.

  6. I usually listen to music on Spotify and then buy things I like through iTunes. There are so many songs there, and it's easy to make playlists!

And I think I need to add WHITE CAT to my TBR list if it's an example of great world-building. That's what I'm tackling at the moment in my revisions.

    Good luck revising!

  7. White Cat looks very interest. Its added to my TBR list. I also listen to music on Spotify - love love it. And i still use itunes sometimes, not as often though. Have fun revising.

  8. I'm struggling with revision doubts too. I'm so close to my story right now, it's hard to know what's right and what needs an overhaul. Good thing we've got great CPs to lean on. I've never read WHITE CAT either, but I always hear awesome things about it. I'm excited to hear what you think!

  9. Yes, tell that little voice to shush... especially when it tries to make you feel like an idiot! I love Holly Black. Going to have to add that one to my TBR list! Have a great week!

  10. Yes, definitely tell that little voice to shush :)

  11. White Cat is fantastic, I really enjoyed that series!

Ugh, I know all about computer laptop refused to recognise anything I plugged into it, but it finally packed it in yesterday. So I've had to order a new one.

Ignore the voice of doubt! Good luck! :)

  12. That's awesome that you've come up with new ideas for changes to your WiP. It's always daunting going in and making those changes, but if you're excited about it, then it's probably exactly what the story needs. Good luck with that! :-)
