What's Up Wednesday: Love Poems and SpongeBob

WHAT I'M READING
I read THE CONSPIRACY OF US by Maggie Hall which I loved. It was like a YA Dan Brown but with less interrobangs (hallelujah), a little less history (which I actually missed), and more swoons (I love swoons). It ended on a cliffhanger and I really want the next book. Now I'm reading HEIR OF FIRE by Sarah J. Maas. I'm having a hard time with this book. I'm almost 200 pages in and just not feeling it. Like at all. This is where fantasy loses me- an entire book about TRAINING. Ergh. Not that the whole book is about that, but the MC has left the setting and the people of the last two books behind and I'm missing that. The subplots the author has brought in just aren't grabbing me. :(

WHAT I'M WRITING
It was not a great writing week for me. I got in 1k and that's it. Blah. But I got my pitch ready for PitchMadness, and rewrote my query and re-entered the trenches on Monday. All that took up a lot of time, not to mention my kids had seven school days off so of course I was busy with them.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
This is always a hard one to answer when I haven't been very productive! But I found something recently that has INSPIRATION written all over it. Turns out, Richard Armitage, AKA: the deep-voiced sometime-Dwarf, narrated some classic love poems and they're FREE on audible. One of the poems is one I used at the beginning of my MS JAR OF HEARTS (which needs more revisions). I don't have the audible app, but you can find some of the poems on YouTube.
There are three poems in this sample (someone has added the North and South soundtrack to the background), and the first one I use in JAR OF HEARTS.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW
My youngest turned six two weekends ago. We celebrated with just the fam on her actual birthday, then last Saturday we had her party where she brought two friends to a movie and then dinner and cupcakes at her favorite place- McDonald's. The movie she wanted to see was the new Spongebob, and it was PAINFUL. I don't even mind Spongebob all that much, my kids used to watch the show all the time. But this movie... BLAH. The kids liked it though, so there's that.
I also had to make a trip to the passport office. Because I'm Canadian, to be paid by a US publisher, I have to get my passport certified and fill out some IRS forms. Lots of fun. Anyone speak Accountant? Because I sure don't.
Anyway, what's up with you?

  1. If it makes you feel any better I couldn't get into Throne of Glass - I actually ended up giving my copy away, so I can't help feeling a little left out when every blogger I know seems to adore the series. :P

Sorry to hear you didn't have a very productive week, but 1,000 words is still more than 0 words!

I'm very sorry you had to sit through the Spongebob movie. It looks terrible. :|

    Have a great week!

  2. Pitch Madness--yay! I'm helping Brenda with the contest this time around. One thing I can say--she is a real pro. Behind the scenes, things are very organized. I'm so encouraged by the writer community.

  3. I feel your pain on the IRS thing. I'm in the UK and my publishers are in the US, so I had to send my documents to the US Embassy in London to be certified, and then over to the IRS office to get an ITIN. I was lucky the process wasn't too painful!

Best of luck with Pitch Madness! :)

    1. I have to get an ITIN as well. It's not too bad, luckily I wasn't at the passport office (with ALL FOUR OF MY KIDS) for too long, and I got my passport back right away. It's the paperwork that kills me.

  4. Best of luck to you with Pitch Madness!

Congratulations on surviving the terrible film. Have a great week!

  5. At least you only had three six-year-olds to wrangle. About halfway through my daughters sixth bday party I was like "What was I thinking???" Too many kids!

    1. Lol! I'm not great at doing birthday parties so I only allow my kids to invite up to 3 friends and then they can pick whatever they want to do. I couldn't handle a huge party with tons of kids!

  6. Love, love, love that Richard Armitage YouTube compilation. So good! I've always loved Sonnet 116, so having him read it aloud with "Northbound Train" in the background is perfection. Thanks for making my day! :D I had to laugh about the Dan Brown interrobangs thing. LOL No doubt. I can't wait to read my copy of THE CONSPIRACY OF US. It's sitting here beside me just waiting for me to pick it up. Must finish BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE first. That's a bummer about HEIR OF FIRE. :-( That's another one I have waiting in the wings.

Good luck in the trenches and with Pitch Madness. Crossing my fingers for you! :D

  7. Good luck with Pitch Madness!

Richard Armitage also narrates a number of Georgette Heyer Regency romance novels, for lovers of historical romance and Mr. Armitage. (I am a bit late to that party, I confess. I think this is because I have not yet watched "North and South", even though I own it on DVD.)

    1. Watch North and South. Watch it right now!!! Actually, my mom has an Elizabeth Gaskell collection, and N&S was the one I least wanted to watch. Now it's my favorite!

  8. Best of luck with PitchMadness! You're right -- all of that non-writing writing stuff does take up tons of time. Hopefully it's worth your while, though. And you totally sold me on THE CONSPIRACY OF US. I love me some swoon!

  9. Aw, I'm sad to hear you're not liking HEIR OF FIRE. I loved the first two books, but haven't yet read that one.

Good luck with Pitch Madness—I have my fingers crossed for you!!

  10. Richard Armitage reading love poetry on Youtube? That is a vortex I might never be able to climb out of. What a swoony voice! Now I feel like watching North & South. Again.

I had kind of a sucky writing week too, so you're in good company. 1000k is still something though, even if you wanted to get more done!

I don't speak accountant, but luckily I'm married to one. Comes in very, very handy. Hope all your accounting issues get resolved smoothly and that you have a better writing week!

  11. When I found out The Throne of Glass series was going be 6 or seven books I decided to just give up and wait until they were all out before picking up the others (I read the first two). 1k is better than nothing! BTW have you seen Richard Armitage in North and South? Swoon!

  12. That recording made me swoon. Literally. I may need stitches :) Good luck with Pitch Madness!
